I am delighted to be featured on the wonderful Jealous Curator blog.
"Ah, Americana… through the skillful brush of an Irish artist. Yep, I want to live inside these vintage-inspired oil paintings by Irish artist Eleanor Mccaughey. Swimming, gossiping, parties, and a meet ‘n greet with JFK himself. The good old days."
Here is a lovely piece written about my show by Aidan Kelly-Murphy for Le Cool magazine.
image is Everything is the latest exhibition by Dublin based artist Eleanor McCaughey hosted in Eight Gallery on Dawson Street. Previously McCaughey, who in 2014 received the Conor Prize from The Royal Ulster Academy, has shown in London’s National Portrait Gallery and Dublin’s Royal Hibernian Academy. This latest work sees her correlate a series of paintings depicting, what appears to me to be, life in middle class America during the 1950′s and 1960′s. I say ‘what appears to mo to be’ because the beauty of this well executed show is its ability to create an environment which encourages you, the viewer, to construct your own narrative.McCaughey drew her subject matter from photographs found in antique markets as well as online archives. The original images were a mixture of both colour and black & white but all are re-presented as meticulously crafted full colour oils on board. Each brush stroke maintains a high attention to detail as McCaughey blends the different styles and eras captured in the original photographs into a single cohesive anthology. A sense of nostalgia is hinted at along with aspects of recent history, via JFK, and collective social culture, via dinner parties and family gatherings. The paintings are accompanied by a pair of sculptures in the form of mini statuettes. These are constructed out of a variety of materials but finished in the same painting style to give a feeling of a 3D portrait of one of the characters from the scenes on the wall. This aspect of the show reinforces the memory association of the images as we place ourselves among the characters on show.
The exhibition finishes tomorrow and I urge you to check this fantastic work before it closes. / Aidan Kelly-Murphy
